Mezzanine / Queens Plaza , Queens New York
competition 2002, honorable mention
Mezzanine bridges over a ten lane stream of cars in and out of Manhattan and links to important sites in the vicinity. Its flexible section incorporates urban furniture such as traffic signs, bicycle parking, benches and lights.Mezzanine enhances and visualizes the liveliness and raw urban energy of Queens Plaza. To observe this spectacle an amphitheater is incorporated at the site where the road bents and a long vista towards the bridge is offered. By introducing a separate cyclist/ pedestrian layer links to important sites such as the temporary MoMa, the Citibank tower and PS1 are improved. By adding the leftover unused pedestrian islands wide side walks are created on both sides of an unobstructed stream of cars that efficiently connect Queens and Manhattan.
