Tunnel Landgoed Schovenhorst, Putten
invited competition 2006
The main attractions of the estate are its collections of exotic tree species and the clearly different characteristics of its landscape elements. There is a light and open arboretum and a dense and dark forest. Both are divided by a busy regional road that cuts the estate in two. We were asked to make a proposal for a tunnel under the road that connects the watchtower in the dark forest and the visitor center next to the arboretum.

The transition of the two different sites at either end of the tunnel is dramatized by chrome gates. These gates are positioned at different intervals. Wide apart at the start of the ramp and closer near the tunnel entry. The rhythm of the gates is continued in the tunnel by porches of light.
